2024 Oakland Athletics: A Plan for the Future

The 2024 season for the Oakland Athletics was one defined by growth, determination, and an eye toward the future. Despite the challenges of a rebuilding phase, there were flashes of brilliance on both sides of the ball that hinted at what could be ahead. For a team in the midst of a transition, the A's front office has shown a clear focus on developing young talent, making strategic trades, and seeking ways to move forward without compromising their long-term vision.

Offseason Moves: Building for the Future

In the 2023/2024 offseason, the A's focused on adding depth and addressing needs that would allow their younger players to gain experience while providing much-needed support across the roster. They made several moves that set the stage for the season to come, signing a mixture of free agents and making trades that reflected the team’s rebuilding strategy.

Among the most notable additions was the signing of Luis Severino, the former New York Yankees starting pitcher, to provide a veteran presence in the rotation. His addition will hopefully bring some stability to a young and unproven group of arms. In the bullpen, the A's signed Ben Bowden and Jason Alexander to further bolster their relief corps, adding flexibility and depth that the team sorely needs.

The front office also continued to focus on building for the future by securing key prospects. In early December 2024, the Athletics traded Will Simpson (minors), Jacob Watters (minors), Joe Boyle, and a draft pick to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Jacob Lopez and Jeffrey Springs. This trade, while not flashy, addresses the need for more pitching depth while giving up talent that may not be needed in the immediate future.

Additionally, the team has made a concerted effort to bring in more versatility and leadership, signing veterans like T.J. McFarland and Matt Krook to help mentor the younger pitching staff. These signings not only add depth but also provide an opportunity for the A's to learn from experienced arms and prepare for future years of competitiveness.

Special Team and Player Accomplishments

The A’s 2024 roster, which was largely composed of young players, saw some remarkable individual performances, with standout contributions on both sides of the ball. Brent Rooker, the power-hitting DH, had an MVP-caliber season. His 39 home runs and 112 RBIs were crucial for the A’s offense and showed that despite the team’s struggles, there are players capable of stepping up and providing the offense needed for success. Rooker’s performance, particularly his .293 batting average and .927 OPS, stood out in a lineup that struggled to consistently produce runs.

In addition to Rooker’s power surge, Shea Langeliers behind the plate was a positive contributor to the A’s offensive efforts. His .739 OPS and 29 home runs showed his development into a reliable presence at catcher. Langeliers’ defense, combined with his offensive contributions, made him a key player in the Athletics' future.

On the mound, JP Sears provided consistent and solid pitching. While he didn't necessarily have an All-Star campaign, his 2.3 WAR, 4.38 ERA, and 180.2 innings pitched were impressive for a team trying to build around young pitching talent. He was the workhorse for the rotation, and his ability to provide stability was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise underwhelming staff.

Mason Miller, with his 2.49 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 65 innings, was another bright young arm. He quickly became one of the most reliable pitchers in the rotation and showed flashes of potential to be the ace the Athletics have long needed.

Why the Playoffs Remained Elusive

Despite the individual successes and the potential shown by some young players, the A's fell short of the playoffs in 2024. Their struggles primarily stemmed from inconsistent pitching and a lack of offensive support in key moments. The team’s pitching staff, while showing flashes of brilliance from younger pitchers like Miller and Sears, lacked depth and consistency to compete over a full 162-game season.

Offensively, despite Rooker and Langeliers' contributions, the team as a whole had difficulties stringing together consistent offensive rallies. The A’s were also significantly impacted by injuries and inconsistent performances from their veteran players, including Seth Brown, Miguel Andujar, and Tyler Nevin. While these players showed flashes of talent, they were often unable to maintain a level of play necessary for sustained success.

Defensively, the A’s struggled at times with errors and inefficiencies that resulted in untimely runs allowed. The combination of inconsistent pitching, a lack of offensive depth, and defensive missteps made it difficult for the A's to compete with teams in the AL West who had better all-around rosters.

Moves Already Made in the 2024/2025 Offseason

The Athletics' front office has already been active in the offseason, making moves to improve both their roster and their future outlook. As previously mentioned, the team secured veteran pitchers to help guide the young staff, with the signings of Luis Severino and Ben Bowden. These moves give the A’s more stability and depth on the mound and will hopefully help keep games closer throughout the season.

Another important addition is J.D. Davis, who was signed to bolster the Athletics’ infield depth and add a consistent bat in the lineup. Davis is a versatile player who can play multiple positions, providing flexibility for the A’s as they continue to experiment with different lineup configurations.

Furthermore, the addition of Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez through trade strengthens the Athletics’ pitching depth and gives them more options for the bullpen and the back end of the rotation.

Speculating on Further Moves to Strengthen the A's Roster

As the 2025 season approaches, the Athletics still have significant work to do if they are to truly compete in the AL West. The following steps could make a considerable impact and move the team closer to playoff contention.

  1. Pursue an Impact Bat for the Middle of the Lineup: While Rooker and Langeliers provide power, the Athletics still need another proven hitter who can consistently get on base and hit for average. The A’s should look into signing or trading for a player like Yandy Díaz or Josh Bell—players who can add balance to the lineup with their on-base skills and ability to drive in runs. Having a reliable bat in the middle of the order would provide the protection needed for Rooker and Langeliers, making the lineup more dangerous overall.

  2. Trade for a Top-of-the-Rotation Starter: Despite the promising development of Sears and Miller, the A’s still lack an ace at the top of the rotation. A trade for a proven pitcher like Pablo López from the Miami Marlins or Lucas Giolito from the Boston Red Sox could help anchor the pitching staff and give the A’s a reliable arm to lead them in tough matchups. A trade for a top-tier starter would also help with the depth and overall consistency of the pitching staff.

  3. Strengthen the Bullpen: The A’s should focus on adding depth and reliability to their bullpen. While they have some talented arms in their system, bringing in a closer with experience, such as bringing back Craig Kimbrel, would provide a much-needed boost at the back end of games. A solid bullpen is essential for a team looking to stay in contention, and the A’s should look to bolster this area with proven veteran talent.

  4. Sign a Veteran Infielder: With Max Schuemann and Abraham Toro providing some infield depth, the A’s could use a veteran presence who can stabilize the middle infield. Signing someone like Jean Segura or Elvis Andruswould bring leadership and consistency to the A’s infield while also providing some much-needed offense at the bottom of the order.

A Long-Term Vision for the A’s

The 2024 season for the Oakland Athletics was one of progress, but also one of missed opportunities. While the team showcased some exciting talent in players like Rooker, Langeliers, and Miller, the A’s still face challenges in building a complete roster capable of competing in the AL West. The 2024/2025 offseason will be critical for the team as they continue to develop their young players and make strategic moves to improve their roster.

By focusing on acquiring a middle-of-the-order bat, adding an ace-level starting pitcher, and bolstering their bullpen, the A’s can position themselves as a team with the potential for sustained success. With a clear strategy in place and continued focus on player development, the Athletics can make strides toward returning to playoff contention in the coming years. The A’s may not be there yet, but they’re certainly on the right track.
